SCUP Pacific Regional Conference Talk on CU Boulder Hellems

On Thursday, May 28, during the SCUP Pacific 2026 Regional Conference at ASU in Tempe, Hacker Principal David Keltner will be presenting with CU Boulder Assistant Vice Chancellor d’Andre Willis and partner architect Tania Salgado of Handprint Architecture on reimagining historic campus buildings. Within a major historic renovation, history and transformation can seem at odds. This session, “Deinstitutionalizing the Institution: Where Legacy Meets Humanity,” explores how the University of Colorado Boulder’s historic Hellems Arts and Sciences Building became a community-centered, high-performing model for modernization. Through integrated planning and deep engagement, we transformed an opaque facility into a daylit, flexible hub for collaboration and reflection. We also incorporated sustainable design into preservation by blending efficient systems with restored materials and responsible reuse.
