Chaku kumtuks haws is an affordable housing community in Northeast Portland's Cully-Concordia neighborhood, developed through a partnership between Portland Community College (PCC) and Home Forward. Designed for residents earning at or below 60% of the median family income, the project offers a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments that support a range of household types, including families, single parents, and adult roommates.
The building's form and material expression draw inspiration from the area's agrarian roots, translating the scale and rhythm of historic agricultural structures into a contemporary residential community. Community spaces are central to the design, reflecting the neighborhood's strong culture of connection and shared experience. Two courtyards provide opportunities for recreation and gathering, while a public plaza links the housing with PCC's Opportunity Center and childcare facility, creating a welcoming civic heart for residents, students, and neighbors alike.
