Client Notes
Restore the grandeur of the 1890s building, the first on UW Seattle's campus, while modernizing all building systems, improving accessibility and increasing seismic integrity. Denny Hall had an invasive full interior renovation in 1957 that cut most of the daylight from the building, creating a inhospitable environment and negating the exterior beauty of the building.

Designer Notes
To bring back light and internal connectivity, an atrium and central staircase were reintroduced. Modern classrooms feature state-of-the-art technology, and connections to the outside are reinstated. The attic, unused since the 1950s, is reclaimed as new loft office space, and accessibility upgrades make the building universally accessible for the first time. As UW's most historic and visually striking building, Denny Hall now has the open, vibrant interior to match the magnificence of its exterior.
