A gallery reception showcasing the works of Nicolas (Nic) C. Smith will be held in the gallery space at Hacker Architects Portland office.

Thursday, March 21st | 5:30-8:30pm

Nic, as both an artist and architect, draws upon each discipline to inform and enrich the other.

ARTIST STATEMENT

There is beauty that exists independent of any meaning we as humans may apply that which is material. Symbol is inherent falsehood - the application of an idea or meaning onto an object for which it did not previously hold.

My work is an exercise in discovery of intrinsic phenomena to a material or of materials coming together through force of action. Searching for something that cannot be seen or sensed but is the definition of a material, the attributes, the structure, the essence. By pressing a pencil to paper both are changed and both can be discovered. This work is an effort to discover rather than apply. To discover the beauty of two materials coming together with force and phenomenon.

Nicolas C. Smith | Matter as Matter (not symbol) is on display thru May 31, 2024.

A couple of notes regarding logistics:

Travel to District Office:

  • By Car: Unfortunately parking in our district is challenging. There is metered parking in the blocks around the building. If you are lucky, there are a few spots directly in front of our office. Consider downloading the Parking Kitty app to pay for the parking, or you can pay via credit card at the pay kiosk. If you need disability accommodations email inquiries@hackerarchitects.com and we will reach out to you with options. The closest pay-for lot is https://parkabm.com/facilities/weatherly-building-surface-lot/

  • By Transit: The Portland Streetcar and the #6 Bus drop off directly in front of our building. Visit Tri-Met for more details.

  • By Bike: We have secure on-site bike parking. You will need to text Sarah Hacker (503-816-9511) to give you access to the bike parking.

 Other:

  • When you arrive at the building, an attentive Hacker employee will be there to welcome you. The door to the building is about 1/3 of the way down the block on the right if you are heading south on MLK. It’s not well marked until you are upon it.

  • There will not be a list of people that RSVPed at the door – you are free to stop by or invite a friend if you didn’t RSVP. RSVPs were only to give us a rough magnitude of order to anticipate beverages and snacks needed.

  • On that note, there will be alcoholic (beer/wine) and a variety of non-alcoholic drinks and light snacks.

Please email inquiries@hackerarchitects.com for additional questions. Thank you.
