Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in travel, style, and food. Hope you have a nice stay!

West Portal Branch Library

I stop by at least twice a week. Such a cool, cozy, clean building.

6,500 SF renovation / 2,000 SF addition
Completed 2007
In collaboration with Karin Payson Architecture + Design

Client Notes
Preserve and restore the architectural beauty and historic character of the library while incorporating modern technology and building systems. Give the community an environmentally responsible and welcoming building they can be proud of.

Designer Notes
The historic building was carefully restored, and a compatible addition with new elevator expands the library and improves accessibility. Inside, original ceiling stencils and woodwork were restored, and energy efficient lighting fixtures consistent with the building's WPA-era style were installed. The design focuses on healthy interiors, energy and water efficiency, and re-engages the building with its urban neighborhood through new bike parking and public outdoor seating.
