Client Notes
Transform the neglected 1892 warehouse into modern, interactive learning spaces, showcasing the inherent beauty of the historic structure while enhancing the active urban environment of the downtown Tacoma campus.

Designer Notes
The Joy Building has been transformed into a welcoming entrance to a pedestrian thoroughfare running along a prominent campus open space. The renovation provides much-needed learning and office real estate, plus retail space that adds vibrancy to the commercial street front. We salvaged and reused as much of the existing building as possible, contributing to its sustainability, beauty, and warmth. The building is the first LEED Platinum certified project in the City of Tacoma and entire University of Washington system, employing design strategies that both reduce carbon emissions and promote wise stewardship of resources.
